Deconstructing A Soap Trailer - Coronation Street

  • The establishing shot is an over shoulder, shot reverse shot between Carla and the two policemen. The shot is lit by lighting with blue filters, directed through a slatted blind. This creates a sense of realism by casting 'gritty' and realistic light on the characters as if it were shining through a window from outside.

  • The shot cuts to an upwards pan of a male character walking down a cobbled alley. This creates  intertextuality because the cobbles that are typically associated with Coronation Street.

  • As the shot cuts to the inside of the Pub, a shadow cuts across the POV shot further constructing a sense of realism.

  • When the shot fades quickly to "Roy's Rolls", the camera becomes the fourth wall in the cafe. This allows the audience to see all of the caracters in the shot.

  • The shot cuts to a BCU of Carla, allowing the audience to see the emotion in her face, creating an engagement with the audience as they feel sympathy for her because she is clearly scared.

  • In the next shot, as the hooded enigma turns around, regular viewers would recognise him as Tony. The cut on his lip shows that he has been involved in some form of conflict.

  • The camera cuts quickly to a MCU of Hayley, who appears to be tied to a chair. A shot reverse shot is then used between the three characters on the set who are all lit by grey light to reflect the time of day and melancholy mood of the scene.

  • After the BCU of Tony, the antagonist, the trailer ends and the chimney stacks typically associated with the opening credits of the soap. The logo for the soap and the channel logo all anchor the show and advertise what time it will be showed and on which channel.
